Is writing examination a waste of time?

Examination as given by today’s students is only means of reproducing data on a piece of paper. You are supposed to write whatever you remember OR create your own concepts real time. You read the data and reproduce it within 2 hours of time. Why is this important? Will this create a good leader?

People when given a task in real life, will use the same concepts and logics which is expected by the examiner more efficiently. If the same set of people when asked to write these concepts on paper within 2 hours may fail drastically. There are complex set of students present in a class, some are not even able to express themselves in a casual open forum, some like me can’t stop talking, does writing an examination give the first type of students to speak up?

Personally I think it is a waste of time and energy. You don’t learn the concepts to replicate it on paper but to use it. If writing is so important, why not write a memo or a white paper instead? Atleast it gives more insight on the subject…

Is anyone listening?

  1. Hey Hemal,

Very well said. I completely agree with you and would second your thought. Having completed 2 semesters at NMIMS, when I look back and try to analysis myself in terms of becoming a better leader, I get a mix response from with in. I have improved on many things and thanks to prof like (Prof Pai, Prof Shirish Chitte & Farida madam) who had a practical training approach in their respective class. But the question is does every one of us really agree and feel that the practical training approach is what we need to apply in real life and not what we read and memories through books!!!!

When I was preparing for my marketing exam I realized the importance of the case study discussion carried out after each lecture by Pai sir. He actually helped to correlated what the books say to real life situation and opened our mind to think laterally in different given situation. I believe that’s what I am here for, to explore new tools, techniques and methods of modern management and learn how to apply them to different situation and scenario.

There are several question which runs into my mind and at times I really find it difficult to answer them.

How often are we able to actually resolve a problem or situation using the theories which we have memories and not understood?

The reason why we are at NMIMS is to transform ourself to become a better leader, is this transformation happening in real sense?

Do the high grades conclude and convey that the person scoring high grade is obliviously a good manager?

I believe it’s high time that we realize our objective of joining MBA (I belive its not just getting a certificate) and make our efforts reflects in our new personality.

Have we become too mechanized that the only objective that we carry is to attend lectures, appears for exams and score average/good marks. Is that for what we are lined up to put 3 precious year of our life??????

  2. you both have been very thoughtful..i think, many of us have started analysing the concepts we have studied in the past 6 months, with our day to day life..Besides, the ones mentioned above, i won’t forget the humbleness of Prof.Kachwala. His sessions on excel were refreshed today, when my boss wanted me to include the mean and variance of some parameters. Many of my colleagues were not aware of this term and then I told them that, its all very simple, my friends, use the VAR function, drag through the range and there you go..

  3. I think that NMIMS is trying to implement the 50-50 funda. If not oral then it’s the written part to be considered. As Hemal correctly said, there are people who can’t stop talking and then there are people who can’t stop writing. NMIMS is trying to capture both the medium of judging student.

But here we are to get the most out of classroom teaching. Now this could be achieved only by our own efforts. I feel all the answers to the questions are lying with us. We have to use teaching as a medium to move ahead and yes marks would definitely not mean that one is good leader or a manager.

MBA is about realization. It’s about perception. Then what is examination?
